Teatro
Juárez Guanajuato, Mexico

A solemn façade of twelve columns, eight bronze muses and an interior that trades classicism for neo-Moorish fantasy. Since 1903, the theater has been one of Guanajuato’s great cultural symbols.

From a former convent to an urban emblem.

Construction began in 1873 on land tied to the former convent of San Diego de Alcalá. José María Noriega’s initial project was later taken up and transformed by Antonio Rivas Mercado, with Alberto Malo leading the final stage.

The theater opened formally on October 27, 1903. Its debut was a performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida. Since then it has served both as a performance hall and as a centerpiece of the cultural landscape of Guanajuato’s historic center.

A dialogue between the classical and the neo-Moorish.

The façade shows a classicist monumentality, while the main hall unfolds a historicist decoration of Hispano-Muslim inspiration. That tension between languages is part of the building’s identity.
